The National Cereals and Produce Board has distributed more than 2.2 million bags of subsidised fertiliser in the North Rift.

“We will move the fertiliser to all areas so farmers can get it without incurring extra costs,” NCPB chief executive Newton Terer said.

Much of the fertiliser has been moved to rural buying centres for easy access by farmers preparing for the maize planting season starting this month.

Hundreds of farmers were yesterday still queuing at the NCPB depots in Eldoret town, but many of them said they did not get the fertilizer they had ordered.

The government imported 104,000 tonnes of fertiliser, which is being moved at a faster rate from Mombasa.

The growers had complained about the delayed supply and accused the NCPB of slow processing.

They said this could lead to delayed planting of maize.

The NCPB says, however, it has improved the distribution process.

Kenya Farmers Association director Kipkorir Menjo said fertiliser supply has improved.

But he said the fertiliser should have arrived in Kenya earlier.
