WATCHDOG WANTED: Jubilee leaders, including Kipchumba Murkomen (holding microphone), join party flag bearer Richard Leitich (in cap) in a dance during a rally in Kapkwen, Nyangores ward, Bomet county, on Monday.

Residents of Nyangores ward should choose an MCA who “won’t go to bed with” Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto on county spending, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has said.

The ward will hold a by-election on Friday following Cecilia Towett’s death in a road crash on October 11 last year.

Campaigning for Jubilee’s Richard Leitich in Kapkwen on Monday, Murkomen said governors want more funds, but they are “yet to achieve anything tangible”.

“We do not want leaders who go to bed with their governors,” the senator said. “We need those who will act as a watchdog to question how funds are spent.”

Present were National Assembly Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso, Nandi Hills Senator Stephen Sang and Nairobi woman representative Rachel Shebesh.

Also present were more than 10 MPs, including Kabete’s Ferdinand Waititu and Runyenjes’ Cecily Mbarire.

The Jubilee teams had campaigned separately in Kapkesosio, Kipsegon and Kipsimbol before meeting in Kapkwen for the main rally.

Leitich is the front-runner in the by-election, alongside PPPK’s Andrew Maritim, who is backed by Rutto.

Rutto held parallel rallies for Maritim along with Kanu secretary general Nick Salat.

With campaigns coming to a close today, both sides have stepped up rallies to woo voters.

Waititu said Rutto is working with Kanu leaders to embarrass President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto with his “village party”.

He urged residents to make Leitich the next elected leader from Jubilee after him.

“We want to surprise Jubilee with more luck,” Waititu said.
