Tension is high in Baringo South subcounty after four people were killed and two injured as two communities clashed on Tuesday.

Armed attackers believed to be from the Illchamus community raided Sandai location at 5pm and killed Francis Koinei, 40, Kiptim Kwalel, 35 and Alfas Cherutich Kipsang, 37.

Sandai assistant chief John Boswony said the bandits injured casual workers Duncan Njuguna and Henry Lilimwo before driving away 500 goats.

They disappeared towards Kiserian location with an unknown number of cows and sheep.

The injured were taken to the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital.

Bodies were yet to be collected from the scene of the attack by press time yesterday.

Boswony said resident Abraham Chepkirwok lost all his 400 goats to the attackers.

Kipsang Chebotibin lost 30 goats, Jackson Kamaruso 40 sheep and Lucy Kiptai six sheep.

“People were caught unawares. Gunshots were heard and later we received news some people had been killed and animals driven away,” Boswony said.

He said the armed Illchamus men were retaliating after the Tugen killed a 38-year-old herdsman at Arabal on Sunday.

The man worked for former Kiserian councillor Stephen Olekwaro.

Last year, armed Tugen men from Arabal attacked the Ilchamus at Sandai, injuring resident Cheresia Nenatano before driving away an unknown number of animals.

Baringo county commissioner Peter Okwanyo, who visited the communities yesterday, promised to deploy more security personnel.

He called for calm, as the government pursues the culprits and recovers the stolen animals.

Last week, 100 guns were registered in East Pokot subcounty.
