Homa Bay UDA party officials back Raila for AU seat

Obuya praised President William Ruto for fronting Raila despite their different political ideologies

Homa Bay county UDA party members have declared their support for ODM leader Raila Odinga’s bid for African Union chairman.

Chairman Kennedy Obuya praised President William Ruto for fronting Raila despite their different political ideologies.

“We are very happy with the president because he is genuinely backing Raila for the chairmanship,” he said.

Obuya said Raila's win will not only benefit Kenyans but the entire Africa.

“We are praying that he wins and lead Africa because is the right man for the job,” he said.

Obuya spoke on Sunday during a UDA party meeting attended by ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

Raila has gained support from local and international leaders after he declared his interest in the AU job.

Recently, Ruto and Raila visited Uganda President Yoweri Museveni to lobby for support.

“I am very grateful to President Museveni for strongly endorsing my candidacy and to President Ruto for fully backing it,” Raila said.

He however said his AU bid will not stifle the opposition’s voice.

With Raila preparing to exit the country’s political scene, leaders from the Azimio coalition have positioned themselves for succession.

Obuya asaid they will continue with mass registration of party members in the Nyanza.

“We have resolved to open UDA doors to everyone in Nyanza. We want new ideas on how we can initiate development projects ,” he said.

Obuya who attended the Eliud Owalo Nyanza Basketball Tournament finals on Sunday, praised Owalo for nurturing talent.

He said sports will bring the community together and keep youths from crime and drugs abuse.

The politician also praised Kisumu residents for turning out to support the basketball tournament held at Kenya sports ground on Sunday.
