A 9-year-old girl was rushed to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital following serious injuries she sustained from a man who defiled her.

The grade four girl at a private school in Homa Bay town suffered injuries in her eyes and rectum after the ordeal.

It is reported that the girl was defiled in a sorghum farm by an unknown man at Shauri Yako estate in Homa Bay town on Tuesday afternoon.

The man waylaid the girl on her way to her grandmother’s house before grabbing her into the farm.

The suspect who escaped after the incident stabbed her eyelids with a sharp object and slit them.

Her grandma said she found the girl crying bitterly after the incident.

“The girl said the man got hold of her throat to prevent her from making noise. She was forcefully defiled before he stabbed her eyes,” she said.

The man also assaulted the girl on various parts of the body with a blunt object.

The grandmother said she saw the man disappearing into the farm but could not be able to identify him.

She said the man dashed into the farm after hearing the voices of women who were rushing to rescue the girl.

The hospital matron Caroline Adongo said the girl sustained serious injuries in her cornea (the inner part of the eye).

She said the orbital bones of both eyes were also ruptured.

“The girl’s eyes were slit after being stabbed. The cornea and the orbital bones have also been injured,” Adongo said.

Speaking to journalists after undertaking an assessment and taking the girl for an operation at the hospital, Adongo said the girl also sustained serious injuries on the rectum and vagina.

The assault had also caused a fistula in the girl since she could no longer control her stool.

“As we speak, the girl has developed a rectovaginal fistula as a result of the sexual assault. She also has traces of semen which indicate that she has been defiled,” the medic said.

The girl was first put on oxygen to allow her to regain her breath.

She was later rushed into an eye theatre where she was undergoing surgery due to the incident.

“The girl is traumatized but she is responding well to the medication,” Adongo added.

Arujo Location chief Bob Lang’o said they are working with the police to pursue the suspect for arrest.

He said the matter is under investigation and they will apprehend the suspect for committing the ordeal.

“The assailant disappeared after the ordeal but we are working very closely with the police to arrest him. Justice must be provided for the girl,” Lang’o said.

Bishop James Kambona of Joy Evangelistic Ministries of Christ who is a resident of the area condemned the incident.

“What has happened is a serious violation of an innocent child’s rights. Let security agencies arrest the man and expose him for punishment,” Kambona said.
