We're urgently addressing Sondu town conflict - PS Omollo

The State will take stern action against perpetrators of skirmishes in Sondu town, Principal Secretary for Interior& National Administration Raymond Omollo has said.

He said the government treats the people behind the conflicts between the town bordering Kisumu and Kericho counties as criminals operating against the law.

Omollo argued that as much as they consider the conflict in the area as of historical problem, the government has directed top security officials from the two counties to meet and discuss ways of restoring peace.

Clashes restarted on Wednesday in Sondu between two different Kenyan communities which undertake their business operations in the town.

The conflict has so far left one person dead as a number of people are reported to have been injured when two groups clashed.

PS Omollo warned that no one will walk freely after causing conflict in the town. The security officers started the meeting on Thursday.

“Security officers are on the ground to look into the matter those who are found culpable must face the law. The government is also reviewing the causes of conflicts,” Omollo said.

Addressing journalists at Oriwo Boys School in Karachuonyo constituency where they are preparing to receive President William Ruto to grace their thanksgiving ceremony, the PS assured Kenyans living in the area of restoring peace.

He said they take the issue with a lot of seriousness that needs urgent intervention.

The government has also drawn up a master plan to ensure families in the area live in peace.

“We have put in place measures to ensure the clashes do not reoccur or get out of hand,” he added.

Omollo also challenged political leaders from the two counties to lead in advocating for peace in the town.

He asked elected leaders to help in managing peace in Sondu town.

 "We know that no one is allowed to take the law into their own hands. But we’re also asking political leaders to come together and help in restoring peace in the area,” Omollo said.
