Two unresolved murders of Gusii-based journalists continue to haunt media operations in the region.

Gusii Scribes Association leaders said the inaction on the killings signals the growing inability of security agencies to tame lawlessness against media actors.

One incident involved the death of Francis Nyaruri of Citizen Weekly nearly two decades ago.

On Friday last week, four information officers attached to the Kisii county communication office alleged being assaulted by goons around the governor's offices.

They alleged that they were assaulted for "being former Governor James Ongwae agents."

"We were surrounded and beaten up and one of us nearly had his camera destroyed when we turned up for the event at the Agricultural Training Centre," one of the affected staff said.

Those affected have since filed a report with the police but no arrests had been made by Thursday.

Gusii Scribes vice chairperson Mongina Onchari Nyamira asked security agencies to act on the matter and bring the suspects to book.

"It paints a worrying picture that in a progressive society, people are using goons to square out political differences with their opponents," she said.

She described the incident as an atrocity marking a new low,  especially coming at a time the world is marking international media freedom day.

The county's human resource department, she said, should take steps to protect all staff among them any trained journalists working with the administration.

The journalists participated in a football tournament where they went down fighting with one goal against two with Rigoma club.

The event was graced by Nyamira speaker Enoch Okero and Rigoma MCA Nyambega Gisesa. Okero rooted for expanded freedom for media players.

He said there was no need for people to harass journalists in the course of their duties.

Gusii Scribes chairman Joshua Araka called for quick trauma treatment for journalists for the injuries they face while in the line of duty.

Gisesa asked media houses to improve working conditions for their staff.

He said low pay continues to demotivate most journalists pushing them to take bribes.
