About 20 community members in Singida and Ogenya Beaches in Nyando have been put on treatment for schistosomiasis.

Health CEC Gregory Ganda said following public concern about a mysterious disease on the two beaches, the County Department of Health launched an immediate response and conducted further investigations.

Ganda said there were community members found with complaints of passing blood in urine, blood in stool, distended abdomen, generalised weakness of the body and discomfort during the passage of urine.

He said samples were taken from affected individuals for analysis.

"Following the laboratory findings of schistosomiasis in some samples, the department of health has already initiated treatment of the patients as appropriate," he said.

In a statement, Ganda said an active case search for those who meet the case definition is currently underway.

"The community health workers have been notified to begin a door-to-door visit of households in search of members who could be having similar health conditions so that they can get investigated and treated," he said.

He urged Kisumu residents, especially those who live along the lake and in flood-prone areas, who have abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, blood in urine or blood in the stool to seek medical assistance at the nearest health facilities.

Ganda said the county has stocked adequate medication for schistosomiasis for those who will need treatment.

"We would also like to notify the public also that for disease control, the ministry of health in collaboration with the county department of health will conduct mass drug administration for schistosomiasis in 2023 if results from a recent survey indicate a high disease burden," he said.

The survey carried out in November, whose results have not been finalised, took samples across the county for analysis, to find out the disease burden.
