Hundreds of street families in Kisumu were on Sunday treated to a luncheon to celebrate Christmas Day.

The initiative sponsored by Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron targeted the less fortunate in society during the festive season.

Beneficiaries enjoyed various food delicacies at the Jamhuri Park.

"We want to ensure everybody celebrates Christmas the best way when people come together for merry making. This is the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ,” he said.

"This is the day people prepare various meals to celebrate the day. But there are those who cannot afford to put food on the table. That is why we are hosting these families.”

The MP used the occasion to interact with the constituents and to thank them for voting for him.

For the last 20 years, Oron said he has been hosting the poor families and street children for Christmas celebrations.

"I have been doing this even before I ventured into elective politics. Now that they have also honoured me with this seat, I will ensure that I give back,” he said.

"Let’s always remember that Christmas should serve as a day of giving to the less fortunate in remembrance of Jesus Christ.”

Oron challenged other elected leaders in various positions to lend a hand to the needy saying there was more blessing in giving than to receive.

“Today is an opportunity to give and celebrate the birth of Jesus. Our elected leaders should give to our people who are not able,” he said.

He noted that Kenyans are faced with a hard economic situation after the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
