Busia police probe death of M-Pesa operator

Police in Busia are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a businessman in the town.

Busia deputy county commissioner Kipchumba Ruto, said the deceased, Samwel Sireka, was shot by unknown people next to his residence around Breeze hotel, Wednesday evening.

Sireka operated an M-Pesa business in the Soko Matope area.

No suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.

“Give us two to three days to complete our investigations and we will arrest the suspects,” Ruto said.

He said several suspects have been arrested in connection with shooting incidents in the past.

Ruto said the government has enough resources to enable security officers to discharge their duties effectively.

“We have enhanced patrols across the county to ensure security and we urge residents to cooperate and volunteer any information to the relevant authorities,’’ he said.

Ruto urged M-Pesa operators to avoid carrying hard cash at the close of their businesses, to avoid being targeted by robbers.

Earlier on, more than 100 traders demonstrated within Busia town to demand an address by the county commissioner 

They urged the security officers to speed up their investigations and ensure that justice is served.
