Residents of Central Nyakach ward in Kisumu can now get water with ease after an MCA aspirant sunk boreholes and water pans to tackle shortage.

The area has been facing acute water shortage forcing residents to trek long distances in search of the commodity.

A resident, Roseline Owino, said women have been suffering and facing serious water problems with children failing to report to school on time.

Owino lauded businessman Vincent Obuya, Central Nyakach ward aspirant, for initiating the projects in the ward.

They projects include three water boreholes, eight water pans and piped water in two areas.

Owino said, children could miss classes in search of water, causing some to even drop out of schools.

At Moro Secondary School, Obuya has constructed piped water distribution project which serves the school and neighbouring environs.

Obuya, who eyes the MCA seat on an ODM ticket, said he has sunk eight water pans in the areas hardest hit by water shortage.

Residents, he said, can now access water for domestic use and for their animals.

For a long period, women have been waking up as early as 5 am daily in search of water.

Obuya said top of his agenda is to ensure the entire ward has access to clean and affordable water when elected.

“I was born and bred in this ward and I know the plights of our people. That is why I have joined hands with my friends to initiate various empowerment projects,” Obuya said.

At Sondu market, he said, residents and even traders now have access to clean water for use after initiating a piped water distribution project from Sondu to Pap Onditi.

Obuya, an accountant, blamed former leaders for failing to fulfil their campaign pledges to the people.

"I want to bring in fresh and transformative leadership aimed at bettering the lives of our people. We must strive to pull them out of poverty," he said.

The politician also supports elderly in the ward. Every month they get Sh5, 000. He also supports 399 children in secondary schools.

“I am also feeding children in schools during examinations and this will be a continuous programme,” Obuya said.

Obuya said he has built 13 houses for widows, who have been living in poor condition.

“The aim is to help as many women in need and restore their human dignity,” he said.

Alfred Omondi, a resident, lauded Obuya for supporting youths in sports and economic empowerment projects.

“He is out to help us be productive and stop depending on handouts from politicians who mostly use youths for politics,” he said.

Pap Onditi boda boda vice chairman James Modi said Obuya has  empowered them to start a sacco which has boosted their income.

Modi said, Obuya donated 20 chairs which they can rent out for income generation.

He rallied youths to stand with Obuya during the nomination and election on August 9.
