Scramble for ODM ticket in the Homa Bay governor race continues to get tougher after another aspirant Isaiah Ogwe launched his campaign.
Ogwe, who is the former county secretary, asked residents to pick him as their candidate during the party nominations scheduled for next month.
He also sought support from stakeholders such as religious leaders, the business community, elders, the youth and political leaders who attended the launch.
The aspirant got a boost after more than eight MCAs and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma endorsed his bid.
The MCAs were Juma Awuor (Homa Bay East), Julius Nyambok (Homa Bay Central), Mary Ojala (Arujo), Joash Achieng (Homa Bay West), Nura Odongo (Kasgunga), Evelyn Otieno (nominated), Edwins Kakach among others.
Kaluma said they are going to help Ogwe clinch the party ticket by campaigning for him in the other seven constituencies ahead of the ODM primaries.
Other constituencies include Ndhiwa, Karachuonyo, Kasipul, Kabondo Kasipul, Rangwe, Suba South and Suba North.
The MP said they decided to endorse Ogwe due to his desirable leadership qualities.
“Ogwe is a humble and honest man who can deliver on his pledges. I stand with him because he has the capacity to transform Homa Bay,” Kaluma said.
Ogwe hails from Kanyada clan in Homa Bay Town constituency.
Majority of his clan including Nyada Ralek elders support his gubernatorial bid.
Kaluma asked constituents to rally behind Ogwe during nominations, adding that they will traverse other constituencies to seek support for him.
“Let today's ceremony mark the voice of the people in this constituency that we are behind Ogwe. We should give him an opportunity to look for votes from other constituencies,” Kaluma said.
He said Ogwe worked harmoniously with the outgoing Governor Cyprian Awiti putting him in a better opportunity to succeed him.
Awiti’s second and final term comes to an end after August 9 poll.
Kaluma said the former county secretary stood with Awiti in all his two terms.
“It’s therefore important for Awiti and the people of greater Rachuonyo to support Ogwe to become the second governor of Homa Bay,” he added.
Ogwe said his interest for the seat had been motivated by the desire to transform Homa Bay to become a better county.
He promised to lead a county government that takes interests of the majority rather than a few individuals.
“My government will be inclusive. My plans are to empower the people of Homa Bay by implementing various development projects that serve their interests,” Ogwe said.
He mentioned his 10-point agenda which include empowerment of women, youth and persons with disabilities, affordable healthcare, education, promoting infrastructure, food security, sports culture and tourism, clean water provision, trade and industrialisation.
Ogwe became the second aspirant to launch his campaigns after that of Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga.
Besides Ogwe and Wanga, other aspirants seeking the party ticket are Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata, former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, Suba South MP John Mbadi, former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga, Kuppet secretary general Akelo Misori, businessmen Jared Kiasa and Louis Ogingo.
