Kisii Woman Rep Janet Ong'era on Tuesday launched her bid for governor with a call for prudence in resource management in counties.

Ong'era said counties need governors who are development conscious and who mean good for their people.

"Counties need an accelerated pace of development which cannot be realised in the absence of effective leadership. This is why I am in the race," she said.

The Woman Rep said while Kisii hasn't faired badly in development under Governor James Ongwae, there is still more that needed to be done to ensure development projects are interspersed well across the county to benefit all areas.

"We need good leadership, our people are not looking for a political leader but a good manager that will instil proper fiscal discipline in the county affairs, a person who will ensure all people are catered for get development in their areas irrespective of their clan," Ongera said.

The legislator was speaking at Maji-Mazuri secondary where she donated water tanks.

She called for peaceful campaigns as the country prepares for the general election.

"I want to urge all politicians to exercise tolerance, there is never opportune time to do so as now when the country is preparing for this crucial poll in August next year," she said.

Speaking separately, Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka  hit at Ongwae for failing to tame graft.

Onyonka who was speaking in Nyamache, Bobasi as he campaigned for Dagoreti North MP Simba Arati who is seeking Kisii governorship, described the county as a den of thieves.

"Simba, I want to tell you, there are so many thieves in the county but as you prepare to take up leadership, ensure public money is spent well, look into it that hospitals do not lack drugs," Onyonka said.

The MP said the graft network is so deep that one has to bribe to get a job.

"Of what importance is it if we educate our youth, get First Class honours in medicine but when he goes to look for a job at the county, he is told to bring Sh800,000 as bribe? This and many other ills are the ones we want you to address," he said.

The MP told Arati to ensure prudence in the management of bursary allocations which he said has never reached the people who deserve but ends up in the pockets of individuals who are buying land and setting up posh homes in Bonchari and Mosocho.

"Each year more than Sh400 million is squandered in the guise of bursary allocations," Onyonka said.

Arati promised to accelerate development when he takes over as governor. He promised to set up factories to help youth with jobs.
