A court in Mbita has allowed police to continue detaining suspects who masqueraded as the KDF officers for seven days as they proceed with investigations.

The police were on Monday allowed to continue holding Gabriel Omwona and Peres Atieno after the DCI requested more time to interrogate the suspects.

Mbita senior resident magistrate Japheth Bii accepted the request. This means the suspects will be taken back to court on November 8, when they are expected to take plea.

The suspects were returned to Mbita police station.

The two were arrested on Saturday in Mbita town after being accused of soliciting funds from residents of Homa Bay and Migori counties to influence their recruitment in the recently advertised KDF jobs.

They allegedly masqueraded as senior KDF officers sent by their bosses in Nairobi for a secret mission.

This was in attempt to win confidence of residents by convincing them that they have strong and reliable connections with their "bosses".

They lied that anybody who would give them money must get the intended job.

Mbita subcounty deputy police commander Alfred Ng’eno said they had received reports from the public that the duo was conning people in the area.

“The public complained these people were taking advantage of the KDF jobs to swindle them funds. We arrested them so that law can take its cause,” Ng’eno said.

He said they are seeking to get additional information from the duo.

“We are warning residents against being convinced by anybody who solicits money from them to influence their recruitment in any government job,” Ng’eno said.
