Traders, who were evicted from Kibuye market in Kisumu two years ago, will be allowed back in November this year.

Kisumu City Board chairman Elijah Adul said the first phase of the construction of the market is nearing completion.

He said construction is 60 per cent complete and that in the next two months, traders would be relocated to the market.

“We have assurance from the contractor that the work will end within the stipulated time,” the chairman said.

Abdul, who led members of the board on a site visit, said the Kibuye market is famous and its status must be improved through proper infrastructure.

The market will accommodate more than 2,000 traders, who are currently selling on the streets of Kisumu.

Adul said the county is putting up a fence around the market to offer traders security.

The infrastructure improvement in the market is aimed at increasing the revenue base for the county.

In April this year, Kisumu City manager Abala Wanga said phase one of the project would cost Sh315 million. The contract was awarded to Nicol Limited.

He said phase one will have four ablution blocks, a boundary wall, roads, walkways, foul water drainage, offloading and customer front parking.

Wanga said the county government will ensure only genuine traders are allocated space through the biometric registration recently launched by Governor Anyang' Nyong’o.
