Lecturers at Kisii University boycotted classes on Tuesday in their latest bid to push the administration to implement a collective bargaining agreement.

They went around the campus chanting 'vice-chancellor Prof John Akama must go'.

"We tell him in no uncertain terms that it is time he quit and pave the way for someone ready to listen to our grievances," union official George Andima told journalists.

The vice-chancellor was not available for comment. He was said to be holed up in a meeting.

The lecturers said they would only return to class if the administration agreed to implement the collective bargaining agreement they had signed with them.

On Wednesday, the lecturers said they had not received salary payments that were in tandem with new capitation schedules.

"While lecturers in other universities have received theirs, here in Kisii we are yet to get word if there are any plans to do so," Andima said.

The university received Sh212 million from the exchequer to implement the 2017-21 CBA on salary increment.

Andima said the university administration has resorted to engaging them in cat and mouse games whenever they broach the subject.

"You don't sign things and later sit by yourself to change them in the dark," Andima said.

The lecturers said they are not willing to sign any further CBAs until the old ones have been implemented in full.

"We can't go on suffering. We are not here as a privilege but as a right and we deserve the best," Andima said.
