Communist Party of Kenya deputy leader Booker Ngesa has donated land for playground to two institutions in Gem constituency.

He bought the Sh7.3 million land and transferred it to Mithine Vocational Centre and Mithine Primary School.

Ngesa said the two playfields will be used for football and indoor games such as hockey and basketball. He said the aim is to help nurture talent in the constituency.

Ngesa, who ran for Gem MP in 2013, said the donation is not politically motivated but is meant to help his community.

He said apart from students in the two institutions, he hopes the playgrounds will help keep other youth occupied and away from ills such as drug abuse.

Ngesa urged the government to fully roll out the competency based curriculum, whose objective is to nurture talent at an early age.

“We must consider solving unemployment through talent development because not every student can excel in academics,” he said.

Ngesa urged the government to emulate countries such as Nigeria, India, UK and the United States, which have used sports to provide employment.

“Sports is not only for leisure. It can transform lives and raise income to the nation,” he said.
