Two guns have been recovered in the last two months in a police crackdown on criminal gangs in Siaya.

County commissioner Michael Ole Tialal on Thursday said police recovered two pistols and were pursuing two criminal gangs believed to be operating in Alego-Usonga and Ugunja subcounties.

“We have received crucial information about the two criminal gangs operate in Siaya and Ugunja towns," Tialal told the Star in his Siaya town office.

The administrator said another mushrooming gang from Seme in Kisumu county was also terrorising residents of Akala in Gem subcounty of Siaya.

On Wednesday, the gang attacked and robbed a businesswoman at gunpoint at Akala trading centre before escaping with cash and valuables.

“Witnesses said the gang escaped towards Seme,” Tialal said.

He said security teams from both Siaya and Kisumu counties were working together to apprehend the gangs.

He said chiefs and their assistants and village elders have been directed to give names of suspected criminals from their areas.

“We have put our chiefs and their assistants on toes to ensure that they furnish us with names of suspected criminals. Those mentioned will be picked for interrogation," Tialal said.

The crackdown follows an outcry by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi who claimed insecurity was in the rife in the region.

Wandayi said two of his constituents were nursing bullet wounds after being shot by armed gangsters at Bugi area. Tialal confirmed the incident.

He asked residents to volunteer information about suspected criminals to police for swift action.

“I have told the public during barazas that they can call my number to give information if they are not confident with other security apparatus,” Tialal said.

The administrator said the crackdown on criminals will be strengthened to get rid of the gangs.
