Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi has asked politicians to embrace the unity of purpose as envisioned in the Building Bridges Initiative.

Wandayi on Monday said the handshake is the only way to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

“It’s only through peace among political leaders that the economy of the nation can flourish,” Wandayi said.

He was addressing residents at Rang'ala in his constituency.

He urged politicians to tone down saying early campaigns for 2022 was already creating an atmosphere of animosity.

He said it was surprising that President Uhuru Kenyatta's succession race was already shaping up barely two years into his second term. He called on leaders to help the President build his legacy.

Wandayi also hit out at Siaya county politicians, saying they should concentrate on development projects instead of initiating premature campaigns.

“It’s heartbreaking that some of our leaders have drowned in lip service politics instead of service delivery,” Wandayi said.

Siaya Governor Cornell Rasanga criticised Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo for constantly attacking his government instead of initiating development in his constituency.

On Sunday, Odhiambo told Rasanga to stop inciting MCAs against him and instead focus on promoting good leadership.

The governor dismissed the claims, saying the lawmaker was being petty. "I have no time for political gimmicks," Rasanga said.

Rasanga spoke during an inspection tour of World Bank-funded projects in Ugunja.
