Police have impounded 18 betting machines and arrested three operators from a house in Kisii.

The raid at Nyangena in Kitutu Chache subcounty was conducted by a multi-agency team led by county deputy police commander Caleb Matoke. Those arrested were a man and two women.

Police also impounded assorted electronic items suspected to be used in assembling the betting machines.

County police boss Martin Kibet told journalists they were trailing other suspects.

" We are still following up crucial leads for the main suspect, a Joseph Mathenge, who is on the run," Kibet said.

Police recovered more than Sh100,000 stuffed in a wooden box in the highly guarded house complex. Kibet said the crackdown will persist until all suspects are apprehended.

"We are casting the net wider because primary investigations point to a cartel on the loose. They have been running dirty businesses in the private complex," Kibet said.

The firm was registered for computer repair business but has been dealing in gambling since it started operations.

The complex has dozens of CCTVs cameras. Area chief said he was denied access alongside census officials when they sought to have residents enumerated on Sunday.

Firm proprietor Joseph Matenge was not in when police stormed the premises at about 10 am on Tuesday.
