The government yesterday destroyed illegal fishing gears worth Sh1.2million in Kisumu.

The gears were impounded from fishermen in Nyakach and Nyando subcounties by fisheries department officers in Kichinjio, Dunga among other beaches in the county.

The operation was presided over by Nyakach subcounty fisheries officer Kevin Wamira and witnessed by a magistrate. The contraband were set ablaze.

The illegal nets are popularly known as “Omena Seine” and which are not recommended for fishing.

“We confiscated the nets during the patrol in various beaches of the Lake Victoria,” Wamira said.
