Plans to upgrade the working conditions of the Kisumu Jua Kali sector are underway, deputy city manager Daniel Okuta has said. He said the informal sector plays a major role in generating revenue for the county through payment of levies. Okuta said there are plans to expand the Jubilee and Kibuye markets in Kisumu town.

Kenya National Alliance of Street Vendors and Informal Traders chairman Anthony Kwache yesterday said the informal sector contributes 90 per cent of revenue generated in the lakeside town. He spoke during a forum to discuss how vendors and the local authorities can work together to enable dialogue between the civil society, local authorities, developers and professionals. The event at a Kisumu hotel forum was organised by the French Institute for Research in Africa.

Maseno University Dean of School of Planning and Architecture George Wagah said universities should carry out research and come up with a curriculum to benefit vendors. “This would enable them upgrade their business skills,” he said.
