Karachuonyo MP James Rege has said his working closely with the government should not be misconstrued as ditching ODM for the Jubilee coalition.

Some of his colleagues in ODM have labelled him a traitor for attending Jubilee thanksgiving prayers at the Afraha Stadium, Nakuru, last Saturday. This followed termination of the ICC cases facing Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang. Rege said he exercised his democratic right of assembly and free expression.

freedom of worship

Speaking on the phone on Thursday, Rege said it was wrong for ODM MPs and other leaders from Nyanza to insinuate he intends to defect.“The constitution guarantees citizens freedom of worship, so I have the right to attend such religious functions and associate with anyone I want,” Rege said.

He said his presence at the event is being taken out of context.

“Attending a prayer rally does not mean one is ditching the party that sponsored him. In Parliament, before we begin business, we pray for the President and the country, so I don’t see how that is different from what happened in Nakuru,” Rege said. The legislator told colleagues who have a problem with him to speak out instead of using the prayer rally to attack him.
