The Kisumu county commissioner has warned politicians against inciting youth to cause chaos at funerals and rallies.

John Elungata said they will not tolerate any leaders sponsoring or linked to outlawed groups.

Elungata, who chairs the Kisumu county security team, was responding to the incident in which Nyando parliamentary aspirant Jared Okello was attacked by youth on Saturday.

One youth was stabbed during the violence that forced some mourners to flee.

Okello was attacked at the funeral of Luo Council of Elders vice treasurer Michael Ojiem in Boya, Nyando. He was rescued by police.

Present were Cord leader Raila Odinga, Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma, Senator Anyang Nyong’o, MPs Nicholas Gumbo (Rarieda), Silvance Osele (Kabondo Kasipul), Aduma Owuor (Nyakach) and woman representative Rose Nyamunga.

The chaos started when Okello’s supporters clashed with those of MP Fred Outa.

Some youth accused Okello of disrespecting Raila.

Okello accused Outa of hiring the youth who attacked him.

He reported to the police and called for speedy investigations.

Outa denied the allegations, saying the attackers are allied to Okello.

Speaking in his office yesterday, Elungata said the county security team will not allow any form of violence, especially as the country nears election.

He was with assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Keitany.

“We have made tremendous gains to improve security. We cannot allow few individuals to take us back,” Keitany said.

He said action will be taken against politicians who encourage youth to abuse drugs and drink illicit brews.

The two praised residents for improving their working relationship with police.
