Garissa women representative Udgoon Siyad has called on mobile service providers not to switch off unregistered lines.

She said doing so will greatly hinder drought response.

Millions of mobile subscribers face disconnection once a state deadline lapses tomorrow, as telcos move to enhance data privacy.

Siyad says the move will greatly hinder efforts of drought mitigation by the government and other partners.

The legislator spoke in Garissa town on Friday.

The Communication Authority extended the sim card registration validation exercise by six months amid calls to lengthen the drive.

The main operators, Safaricom, Airtel Kenya and Telecom Kenya have since provided an online portal where subscribers can update their sim details and confirm their registration.

The MP said disconnecting lines of beneficiaries in the midst of a humanitarian crisis amounts to violation of their rights.

She said most of the rural folks don’t know how to read the messages sent to them on their gadgets.

CA has however, remained tight-lipped on the possibility of a further extension.

Kenyans are speculating on whether they will make good their threat to switch off the unregistered lines.

Siyad urged the CA consider extending the exercise a little bit longer.

“Disconnecting sim cards would seriously affect millions of victims of the ravaging drought in more than 23 counties, since they receive cash transfers via platforms such as Mpesa and Airtel money,” she said.

The legislator said millions of Kenyans are in need of humanitarian aid and many NGO's have stepped in to offer the much needed support.

“Their support includes water trucking, provision of animal feeds to protect livelihoods, health services and cash transfers to thousands of beneficiaries across the drought-stricken counties. This cash transfers run into billions of shillings,” she said.

“I appeal for this delay till the drought is over. Leading mobile service providers can then do public awareness on the same, in the interiors of the counties and re register them there and then if possible,” he said.

CA earlier said the decision to extend the deadline arose from an assessment of telecom operators preparedness to ensure compliance as well as public outcry over a number of issues.

On Monday, Garissa Governor Nathif Jama appealed for immediate intervention measures for the ravaging drought.

He appealed to development partners, donors and the national government to work together.

Jama said the immediate focus should be on life-saving interventions including water, food and retaining of children in schools.
