Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali and his deputy Solomon Gubo Riwe have been cleared by IEBC to defend their seats in August.

The duo will be seeking to retain their seats through the United Democratic Movement party.

The governor urged his opponents to uphold peace and tolerance during campaigns.

He said all leaders have a responsibility to promote peace and tone down negative rhetoric and smear campaigns.

"The political season is with us and this is when politicians say anything to gain political mileage. I appeal to politicians not to divide people and instead promote peaceful coexistence," Governor Mohamud said.

He asked the electorate to elect sober, transformative and development-conscious leaders.

The governor said he has initiated many projects to transform residents' lives.

Mohamud said the electorate will assess him on the work he has done and give him another chance to lead them.

He said he has introduced scholarship programme that benefitted hundreds of students from poor backgrounds and NHIF cover.

The governor will face UDA candidate Kello Harsama, Kanu's Chachu Ganya, UPIA's Pius Yattani, ANC's Sunya Orre and Jubilee candidate Wario Guyo.
