Hundreds arrested in Garissa for violating Covid-19 rules

Hundreds of people were arrested on Tuesday at Garissa market for violating Covid-19 rules.

Garissa police boss Joseph Muriuki said those apprehended would be taken to court on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear how many people were arrested.

The arrests are part of a major crackdown ordered by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai on those violating Covid-19 containment protocols.

Garissa’s Muslim for Human Rights (Muhuri) field officer Abdishukri Jele termed it ironic for the police to enforce Covid-19 rules, only to cram people into their vehicles.

“We also know cells are so tiny and crowded. I don’t know what measures the police have put in place to ensure social distancing‚” he said.
