Samburu council of elders on Sunday converged at the county government headquarters in Maralal town for a cleansing ceremony for Governor Moses Lenolkulal and his administration.

They said the governor and top county officials have been befallen by bad luck, including plans by the EACC to prosecute him over alleged embezzlement of Sh2 billion.

The more than 50 elders chanted Samburu prayers while sprinkling  milk on the county offices to rid the administration  of bad omens.

On Thursday, members of Tinga group ranch in Samburu central protested at the county offices against a decision of the government to issue title deeds in three phases after the ranch was subdivided.

After they were done cleansing the outside of the offices, some of the elders entered the governor's office.

They walked round in circles while praying. Governor Lenolkulal joined in the prayer, repeatedly calling on 'Nkai' (God)) while clenching and unclenching his fists as he sat at his desk.

The elders took turns to bless the governor by srinkling fresh milk on his hands and forehead from a special guard known as 'Nkoiting'.

“Our governor and his administration have been going through rough times and we have decided to solve this through prayer to give him strength to soldier on," elder Wilson Leaduma said.

Woman Representative Maison Leshoomo who attended the ceremony praised the elders for their decision.

“Our elders usually pray whenever there is a problem and therefore we thank them for coming here to bless the governor and the entire county,” she said.
