The Kenya-Somalia security border wall was a shoddy project aimed at siphoning public funds, Northeastern leaders have said.

Led by National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale, the leaders said chain-link wire mesh used in building the wall is sub-standard.

Duale said Sh3.9 billion meant for the project has been embezzled hence the buying of substandard materials and shoddy work in the wall's construction.

Isiolo Woman Representative Rehema Jaldesa said the project has disrupted the lives of locals. She said wall was a "mere chicken wire mesh that cannot prevent al Shabaab from crossing into Kenya."

Mandera East MP Omar Sala had filed a motion in Parliament challenging the quality of materials used for the construction of the wall.

The leaders said they will re-table the motion because the country was losing millions through corruption in the project.

Mandera border security wall was meant to seal porous border points besides curbing al Shabaab attacks. It is supposed to run from Mandera border point one to Kiunga in Lamu county.

It is being constructed by a government multi-agency group led by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF).

The leaders spoke on Saturday in Mandera during a fundraiser for the building of Madrassa at the Aflax Islamic Centre in Khalalio.
