Over 6,000 youths in Garissa county will benefit from an elaborate programme to empower them on alternative means of earning a livelihood.

The programme involves training of youths on entrepreneurship and employability skills, livestock rearing, fruit value chain and management.

This emerged yesterday following a meeting between Garissa Governor Ali Korane and representatives from the Office of the President.

Under the programme, Garissa Vocational Youth Training Centre has been identified as the Youth Innovation Hub where the training will be conducted.

The programme targets youths from across the country, but Garissa has been chosen as 'the role model' for the greater northern Kenya counties.

Korane said the youth are the most vulnerable group and are easily lured into criminal activities, including terrorism, hence the need to engage them directly.

“We all know that youth are the majority in this country and have different talents that can be exploited for their benefit, but if they are left on their own, they can be a security threat. I believe this noble programme will go along way in addressing some of the problems,” Korane said.

During a recent United Nations General Assembly conference, President Uhuru Kenyatta was appointed the Global Champion for Youth Agenda.

To actualise his role, the Ministry of Education, through the Centre for Mathematics and Science Technology in Africa (Karen), and the Office of the President have rolled out this programme targeting the youths and vulnerable groups.

The programme is dubbed Out of School Youth for Science, Technology, Engineering and Innovation.

The programme will dwell on education, health and economic empowerment as well as leadership and governance.

The trainers are also working with Garissa University and local security agencies to train youths on ways of countering violent extremism, as this has been a big hindrance to the realisation of economic development.

Recently, the deputy county secretary Abdirashid Mohamed said the county will partner with the national government and start mapping areas where youth have crossed the border to ensure they are monitored closely.

Abdirashid said Ijara, holugho,Dadaab, and Fafi are the most affected areas.
