Farmers in Garissa County have asked both County and National government for help after their farm produce were swept away by floods as results of Tana River bursting its banks.

Speaking to the press Garissa county livestock and marketing council chairman Dubat Amey said farmers are unable to access their farms at a time they anticipated harvest.

He said over 500 farms along Tana River have been affected adding multi sectorial approach by both county and national government for long time solutions for the farmers.

Amey asked the county government to immediately quantify the losses incurred by the farmers adding that some of the farmers are desperate since their produce have been destroyed.

“The farmers along the river in Garissa, Tana River and parts of Lamu have been affected, its time the government to do a multi sectorial approach to ensure farmers are protected when there are floods,” he said.

River Tana has burst its banks due to heavy rains that have been pounding in some others parts of the country, this has also made hundreds living along the river to abandon their homes to flee for their safety.

“We appeal for help from both county and national government as well from donors,” he added.
