Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua will officially launch the Maendeleo Chap Chap movement at the Bomas of Kenya tomorrow. The governor has fallen out with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka over the movement.

Delegates from the 47 counties are expected to attend the launch. Senior officials associated with the movement, who sought anonymity, said more than 50 MPs, 350 MCAs and many hopefuls are expected at the event.

The movement has already opened offices in 35 counties and has triggered political anxiety, especially in Ukambani.

But Mutua, through his press secretary Mutinda Mwanzia, yesterday said the launch will focus on development and people-driven politics. “We need a new and rapid development formula for all of us to effectively roll back poverty, create employment, build roads, provide better health services, water and improve the lives of the wananchi. That formula is Maendeleo Chap Chap,” he said.

Mutua said the era of selfish leaders, who play endless politics of poverty to “keep people destitute and maintain themselves as the masters”, is long gone.

“These leaders are constantly criticising others and talking of poverty levels to hoodwink the wananchi, but they have done very little to fight poverty,” the governor said. “They have nothing to show in terms of development, but empty rhetoric. Our mothers still walk many kilometres to the river for water and our youths are joblessness.”

He urged Kenyans to register as members of Maendeleo Chap Chap.

Mutua said they will open offices in all the 47 counties, terming the movement “unstoppable”. “These offices will be used to engage wananchi in this new political paradigm shift that focuses on bringing speedy, real and tangible change,” he said.

Early this year, Mutua said the movement is the only political outfit with purely Kamba roots.
