‘We should strive to fight graft as a society because it affects every individual’

Kenyans have been urged to speak out and report cases of corruption in society. EACC commissioner Dabar Maalim said wananchi should not fear to report corruption incidences, particularly on service delivery in the public sector. He spoke on Thursday after a one-day education forum at the Garissa University College. “Corruption is not a preserve of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission alone, but for every Kenyan. We should strive to fight corruption as a society because it affects every individual,” Dabar said.

The commissioner said it is important to educate communities, especially at the grassroots, because they play an important role in the fight against graft.

Northeastern EACC regional deputy director Humphrey Mahiva said investigations on corruption are being carried out in Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties. He said some files have been forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the findings will be made public soon. “We are getting the cooperation from the counties save for a few individuals, who are trying to block investigations by frustrating our officers,” Mahiva said.

Garissa Deputy Governor Hussein Abdullahi said corruption is a big problem, which has permeated the counties and has compromised service delivery.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has in the past said senior government officials will not be spared as various anti-corruption agencies have shown “unprecedented unity without compromise”. The President challenged the judiciary to play its role in ensuring a successful fight against graft, saying it has matched the zeal, but must live up to that commitment. He termed the war on graft “unstoppable”.
