Garissa County Refferal Hospital chief executive Dagane Mohamed has sought to allay fears of a possible spillover of cholera from neighbouring Tana River county.

One of the nine people from Tana River county undergoing treatment at the facility died.

Mohamed said seven have been discharged. Two are in stable condition, he said.

Mohamed said a vigorous campaign has been launched to educate residents on how to maintain high standards of hygiene.

The outbreak has caused panic among Garissa town residents. Six people from Boka, 100km away, have died.

Tana River Governor Hussein Dado has urged residents to maintain good standards of hygiene to stop the spread of the highly contagious disease.

Six people died in Tana Delta subcounty last week.

The public health department has closed all eateries in major towns of Tana Delta and Tana North subcounties to contain the outbreak.

On Wednesday, Tana River Health Committee chair Manase Guyo said food hawking has been banned.
