A major road linking Kenya and Ethiopia will be complete in six months, Infrastructure PS John Mosonik has said.

He said the 121km road from Merille to Marsabit and the 122km stretch from Turbi to Moyale are part of the strategic transport corridor linking Mombasa Port to Addis Ababa.

“Once complete, the road will have a significant impact on regional integration and trade for the benefit of Kenya and Ethiopia to promote regional socio–economic development,” he said.

Mosonik and Kenya National Highways Authority director general Peter Mundinia inspected construction progress on the section from Merille River to Marsabit road last Friday.

They said it is 77 per cent complete.

The last section of the project from Turbi to Moyale, which is 15km, has not been tarmacked.

The national government funds 498km from Isiolo to Moyale.

The African Development Bank and European Union will help open Southern Ethiopia and Northern Kenya by providing a link in the Trans-East African Highway.

It connects landlocked Ethiopia to the Port of Mombasa.

The corridor will also be key in supporting the Lamu Port Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport project.

Mosonik urged the contractor Gulsan Insaat, a Turkey-based firm, to speed up the remaining works.

Mundinia said the road will help improve security.
