The Education ministry has closed 37 private schools in Yatta subcounty for operating illegally.

Some were operating behind bars and kiosks.

Subcounty education officer Elikana Nyaga yesterday said the closed schools are mostly kindergartens and a few going up to standard one.

Nyaga said the schools were not registered with the ministry.

Most were operating in a bad environment for learning, he said.

He said the worst hit zone is Kinyaatta, which had 10 schools closed, Kithimani (seven), Ikombe and Ndalani (six), Mavoloni (five) and Matuu (three).

Nyaga said some had only seven children, and they will be transferred to other schools.

Speaking in his office, he warned anybody planning to start a school in the subcounty to ensure the school is registered.

Elsewhere, Kithimani HGM principal David King’oo was on Thursday interdicted over what the TSC termed gross misconduct.

County TSC director Muturi Ireri said King’oo has been replaced by Damaris Musembi from Katani Secondary School in Athi River.
