WAJIR North MP Ibrahim Saney has accused security agencies of failing to act on intelligence reports pointing to an attack on a university in Garissa county.

Saney said he deeply shares in the pain of the families who lost their loved ones when al Shabaab militants killed 147 people at Garissa University College on Thursday.

He said he was also distressed that more than 70 people were injured.

“Even as we mourn the loss of lives, I am alive to the fact that there was sufficient intelligence of the attack. Consumers of intelligence have once again let Kenyans down,” Saney said.

He said the deadly attack demonstrates the reactive nature of Kenya’s security apparatus.

“We always end up with maximum fatalities from such attacks because our security is by default reactive. It must strive to be proactive,” the MP said.

He said the Somali community has a role in ensuring Northeastern is free of terror cells.

Saney said terrorists live among the community, but residents have done little to flush them out.

“We, as the Somali people, must take a share of the blame because we have allowed terrorists to live in our midst. We do not report them to the authorities and sometimes we allow them to travel long distances without confronting them,” he said.

Lawyer Ahmednassir Abdullahi has linked the attack to internal politics within the Somali community.

“Let us be truthful to ourselves. Kenyan Somalis and their leaders must stop the senseless killings in northern Kenya. Full stop...” he posted on his Twitter handle.
