The Machakos county government will supply farmers with free seeds and subsidised fertiliser to end food shortage.

The head of the Agriculture docket, Larry Wambua, said they will also provide tractors at no cost.

"These are part of the subsidies we promised farmers in our campaigns. We have factored their cost in our current budget," he said in Machakos town.

Wambua said the county government will launch a pilot project to give farmers grade cows on loan to boost milk production.

The dairy farmers will get free extension services when an investor puts up a milk processing plant.

"Our target is to be self-sufficient in food production in the next two years and have surplus for storage and export," Wambua said.

He said the county government has set aside money to build silos because it intends to buy grain from farmers for storage.

Wambua said the county is looking for investors in the fruit processing business to cater for mango and passion fruit farmers.

He said Machakos produces quality avocados which could fetch premium prices at the international market.

"An avocado goes for about Sh200 in Dubai. Our farmers can rip huge profits if we link them to international markets," Wambua said.

The minister said there are plans to put up a coffee mill.

He called for the strengthening of co-operative societies.

The lawyer and horticulturalist said subsidies are the only solution to boosting agriculture to end dependance on relief food.

Wambua called on politicians to stop criticising Governor Alfred Mutua for the sake of it because the county government has achieved much in the first 100 days in office.
