Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja will on Thursday host his first Madaraka day since he assumed office.

The governor announced that Nairobi's 60th Madaraka day will be held at Joe Kadenge Stadium, formally known as City Stadium from 8 am.

Residents in the City are expected to throng the stadium to mark one of the most valued memories.

However, the main 60th Madaraka day will be presided by President William Ruto in Embu.

This will be the first Madaraka day to be presided by Ruto since he assumed office in September 2022.

Over 10,000 people are expected to attend Madaraka Day celebrations at the Moi Stadium in Embu.

Most counties will also converge in their various places for the celebrations.

Madaraka Day is significant in Kenya's history because it is on this day in June 1963 Kenya formed the first indigenous government.

It is a national holiday that is celebrated every 1 June in every year to commemorate internal self rule.

‘Madaraka’ is a Swahili word that translates to ‘authority,’ which is why June 1 was designated Madaraka Day.

Kenyans across the country celebrate this day by attending military parades and other festivals promoted by the government and other organizations.
