Three found dead in house after suspected cholera in Kibera slum

Health ministry data shows that Nairobi has recorded more than 500 cholera cases since October last year.

Health officials are investigating the death of two men whose bodies were found in Kibera slum following a suspected cholera outbreak.

Residents said the two men, one aged 38 and another 45, were found dead moments after they complained of diarrhoea and vomiting.

One of them was found dead in his house with loose stool in a basin as he was unable to stand and walk to a toilet.

The second one was found lying dead at a nearby clinic where he went to seek medical attention.

The third victim, who stayed with the deceased men, survived and was admitted at a local clinic with similar complaints.

Another body of a mechanic was found at his yard in Dagoretti Corner  moments after he had complained of stomach ache.

The mechanic complained to his colleagues of the pains and went to rest at a corner where his body was found moments later.

Police were called to the scene and picked up the bodies.

Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei said preliminary findings point to a cholera outbreak in the area but added that health experts are handling the matter.

Cholera has claimed more than 100 lives since October last year.

The data further shows 76 of those who have died are men, while 23 are women, with the case fatality rate standing at 1.5.

Nairobi has the highest number of deaths at 34, followed by Tana River at 18, Garissa 12, Wajir 11, Kiambu and Mandera five deaths each, Kitui four while Homa Bay and Meru have three deaths each.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria.

People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria.

The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening

Symptoms in infected persons in the early stages include profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, loss of skin elasticity, dry mucous membranes, low blood pressure, thirst, muscle cramps and restlessness or irritability.
