A 38-year-old man was arrested moments after he stabbed and killed his brother in a feud over property in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
Police said Ahmed Abdulahi stabbed his younger brother Abdinassir during a quarrel over Sh200 million property along Yusuf Haji Road on Wednesday.
He used a kitchen knife he had to stab his own brother before he fled the scene. He was later arrested in the same area as he sought to leave the city, police said.
Starehe police boss Julius Kiragu said the two have been squabbling over a family property.
“They went physical before one of them stabbed the other killing him on the spot,” Kiragu said.
He said they recovered the weapon and plan to arraign the suspect as the probe into the incident and feud goes on.
Kiragu said there has been an increase in cases involving family and friends feuding over property in the area in the past months.
He urged the affected parties to always seek redress through official channels and not resort to crime.
“The incidents are increasing at an alarming rate. On a daily basis we receive reports of people fighting over property,” he said.
Eastleigh is one of the fastest growing places in Nairobi with land being hot cake. This has seen a spike in prices for property and demand, hence the fighting, officials say.
To address the situation, authorities have opened at least three police stations there. This has seen more officers being posted at the stations to address the demands. The stations include Pumwani and Eastleigh.
Starehe subcounty police command was moved to Ruaraka to enable Pangani address more specific areas as the demand for services increases.
Pangani is one of the busiest stations in the city.
Major roads there have also been expanded and re-carpeted to address the perennial traffic jams.
