The Mathari Hospital has been sued for negligence by the family of an alcoholic rehab patient who they say was beaten and left for dead.

The family of Simon Mucheru, 41, says the man was admitted to the hospital’s Drugs and Rehabilitation Centre where he was beaten.

Through Gatumuta & Company Advocates, the family has also sued the ministry of Health, copied the letter to the Parliamentary Committee on Health, petitioning it to investigate.

The committee is headed by Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege. Mucheru was found unconscious with a swollen head on January 1, when he was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital.

He is still admitted at KNH’s intensive care unit.

The family says he was an alcoholic.

The matter was reported to the Muthaiga police station.
