The troubled Mwiru Cooperative Society in Tharaka Nithi will conduct elections on March 1 as part of revival plans.

The society has recently been rocked by leadership wrangles that have deteriorated production and delivery of coffee berries to factories.

The conflict has split members and contributed to farmers taking coffee to other factories. Some farmers stopped growing coffee and planted other crops.

While speaking to reporters in his office on Wednesday, Governor Muthomi Njuki said they have reached a consensus on the revival plans and agreed with committee members to hold elections on March 1.

“My government has enough manpower to ensure a successful election,” he said.

Security will be beefed up at the factory level and society level. Njuki warned that those who will interrupt the election will face the law.

Mwiru Cooperative Society has 1,450 registered members who will go to the polls to elect seven committee members and three supervisory committee members.

Contestants should be able to read and write, be 18 years and above, and one should not be an employee of the society.

Njuki said those who meet the four qualifications should indicate the position they want to contest for before February 22.

He said the county attorney will liaise with Mwiru society to supervise those who will forward their application papers.

The governor said bars in Mugwe, Kithangani and Magumoni will be closed on the election day.
