Makueni Speaker Douglas Mbilu has been acquitted by Makindu Law Courts over a charge of causing riots.

This was after an application by the Director of Public Prosecution requested the court to drop the case due to lack of evidence.

Mbilu was arrested on July 24, 2023, following claims of organising anti-government riots in Emali.

He appeared before the court for a hearing on July 25, 2023, and was released on a cash bail of Sh70,000.

Appearing before Magistrate Moreen Kibe on Tuesday, the speaker was set free due to lack of evidence in his case.

In his address to the media immediately after being acquitted, he defended his stand saying he wouldn't cease to criticise the government.

"The government of the day should not threaten people or intimidate them by arrest, this is just a start I will continue to represent my people without fear," Mbilu said.

For Mbilu, the Constitution of Kenya has apprehended every citizen with freedom of speech something he says shouldn't be violated.

"It's a shame for government vehicles to get fueled to arrest innocent citizens only to be released later based on no evidence," Mbilu said.

He urged all elected leaders to speak up and defend Kenyan citizens without fear of intimidation.

Mbilu was arrested with the Majority leader in the County Assembly Francis Mutuku for causing chaos at the Emali in the Azimio One Kenya demonstration over the high cost of living last year.
