Kitui CBO lands deal to sell woven baskets globally

A Community Based Organisation in Kitui county has signed a deal with international partners to sell woven baskets to global markets.

The deal between the CBO, Kyalo Kya Maendeleo, United Nations and a German investor was made possible by Kitui county government.

It seeks to economically empower and uplift the standards of lives of the thousands of women who are members of the CBO.

The CBO's founder Augustine Muli praised the deal terming it a breakthrough for rural women.

He said they met the investors during an exhibition at the Nairobi International Trade Fair. 

"The primary objective of this alliance is to secure a robust market for the contemporary woven basket crafted by women groups across Kitui county," he said.

Muli spoke during the launch of the partnership in Ngiini village, Kitui Township.

The launch was attended by representatives of the county government, the UN and the German investor.

The international partners promised to look for more markets for the baskets.

Kitui county committee member for trade, Rose Mawia said the county will empower local businesses to produce more products for the international markets.

Basket weaving is one of the economic activities in Kitui county.

Access to regional and international markets is one of the main problems the activity has faced.
