I'll defend devolution if elected senator, says Governor Wambora

Says he will lobby to have county funds increased from 15 per cent to 35 per cent

I will be the commander of the devolution defence force once elected senator, Embu Governor Martin Wambora has said.

Wambora who is also the chairman of the Council of Governors said he will initiate motions to increase funds allocated to counties and have them disbursed on time.

The governor spoke during his Umoja na Maendeleo Party nomination certificates issuance ceremony at Embu town on Wednesday.

"I'll ensure together with other elected members we'll fight for and protect devolution. Kenyans depend on devolution for development," he said.

The senatorial aspirant said he will be committed to increasing the county funds allocation from the current 15 per cent to 35 per cent. "We don't require a referendum to do that, we'll pass the bill."

Wambora said development within all 47 counties depend on Senate.

"Once all counties develop, the country will also develop from seven per cent to ten per cent as Kibaki did. We have to ensure a continuous Kibaki development trend," he said.

The governor said the National Treasury has been delaying county funds, contributing to delayed development within counties.

He said the Senate should address the delays and ensure funds are disbursed on time.

During the event, Wambora issued 16 nominations certificates to UMP party aspirants, he was also awarded the certificate to vie for Embu senator.

Others who received nomination certificates include Umoja na Maendeleo Party chairman Samuel Njagi who is contesting for the Gaturi North MCA seat.

Also, the party's secretary general Stella Kagendo eyeing Kagaari South MCA and Caroline Muthoni Mbae seeking the MCA Kagaari North.
