Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has said he did not opt out of the Meru gubernatorial race because he feared Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi.

Munya said he wanted to vie for the position in August 9 election but he opted to stick with President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration because was asked to stay on.

“He told me I was doing a good job and I needed to finish what I started to help Kenya farmers,” Munya said.

He spoke Friday at Kibirichia in Buuri constituency where he met potato farmers.

Munya announced last week that he will not be vying for Meru governorship race, leaving a lot of his supporters disappointed.

Meru Woman Rep Kawira Mwangaza is the only candidate who has declared interest in the governship race although there are calls for Meru Senator Mithika Linturi to vie on a UDA ticket.

The Agriculture CS added that he did not opt out of the gubernatorial race because he feared to lose to the incumbent.

“If you look at me really, do I look like someone who is a coward?” Munya said.

He further said he will support any candidate who vies for Meru governor on Raila Odinga-led Azimio outfit.

“We will also look at what the candidate can do for the people of Meru as they have told me the projects I initiated were not finished."

Munya said he will be rooting to sell Azimio in Meru and will continue campaigning for Raila as he is best presidential aspirant to succeed Uhuru.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta and I have resolved to stick with Raila Odinga and we will not change as he is better than the Deputy President William Ruto,” he said.

He added that Ruto is not known to be a straight forward leader and will plunge the country into corruption if he takes over country's top seat.

Munya said will not hesitate if he is picked by Raila Odinga as his running mate.

East African Legislative Assembly MP Mpuru Aburi said Meru have decided to support Azimio.
