The state through the Education ministry has increased the number of TVET institutions in a bid to curb the unemployment among youths.

Education PS Margret Mwakima said the institutions have been increased from 52 in 2013 to 238 at a cost of Sh10.6 billion.

This is in line with the Big Four agenda to transform Kenya into an industrialised and middle-income country.

Mwakima spoke during the commissioning of a mechanical engineering department at Tseikuru TTI on Monday.

“Technical and Vocational Education Training is a deliberate strategy by the government to address youth unemployment through the provision of knowledge, skills, research and innovation,” she said.

Tseikuru Technical Training Institute is one of the eight TVET institutions established under the African Development Bank intervention 2009-2014 which benefitted 27 institutions.

Mwakima also said the government intends to have a technical training institute in every subcounty and later have them elevated to national polytechnics.

Mwingi North MP Paul Nzengu said the institution will not only equip learners with technical skills but also aid in the economic growth of the town.

He also urged residents to ensure that youths enrol in the learning center.

"I encourage business people to invest in construction of rental apartments that will accommodate learners together with other persons," Nzengu said.

Ann Mirema, Kyuso deputy county commissioner said the area has not witnessed any cases of insecurity lauding the learners together with the community.

She also urged parents to encourage youths to join the training institution.

The institute’s board of management chairman Nyamu Mati said the center that began in January 2016 has enrolled over 500 learners from across the country.
