Former Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire is among eight candidates who will contest for the Kilifi county assembly speaker seat.

Mwambire is being fronted by the ODM party.

Intensive lobbying for the seat is ongoing.

Other candidates who have shown interest are Sokoni MCA-elect Raymond Mwaro, Eliud Kalama, Tendai Mtana, Amani Mkare, former Sokoni MCA Gilbert Peru, William Kenga and Caroline Chilango.

The candidates have been meeting MCAs from the seven constituencies to lobby them to support their bid.

The ODM and the Pamoja African Alliance party are expected to lock horns in the elections.

In Kilifi, ODM won 18 out of the 35 elected MCA seats, PAA scooped six and the other parties shared the remaining slots.

Mwambire who is also the Kilifi ODM chairman was ousted from the Ganze parliamentary seat by Kenneth Kazungu of the PAA party.

Kalam (ODM) and Mkare (PAA) lost the Kilifi North MP seat to Owen Baya of UDA.

New faces of MCAs will dominate the Kilifi assembly after electorates voted out 28 of the 35 MCAs during the August election.

Kilifi Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition leaders led by Governor Gideon Mung’aro had agreed to back Mwambire for the speaker position.

Mwambire served as deputy speaker between2013 to 2017 when he was the Sokoke MCA.

“Without doubt, I have what it takes,” Mwambire said.

By law, the election of the 47 county speakers is supposed to be effected immediately once the MCAs are sworn in.

The speaker is the spokesperson of the assembly and must ensure the dignity of the assembly is upheld and presides over debates of the assembly at every sitting.
