Grade 3 learners from various private and public schools in Mombasa have started the Monitoring Learners Progress exercise.

This is in line with the Kenya National Examination Council guidelines of the CBC where the learners must undergo the assessment before proceeding to the next level.

Mary Joy Kindergarten and Primary School is among schools that have started the MLP exercise, where Grade 3 learners visited the Mother's Vision Children Rescue Centre in Mtwapa on Saturday.

The school headteacher Evans Muasya said the institution is making strides in adhering to the KNEC guidelines ahead of the national exams set to begin in October.

"We have our Grade 3 Monitoring Learners Progress national assessment in the 2022 Integrated Learning Areas. The theme is molding a patriotic citizen for peaceful co-existence, that is why we are doing this in line with the KNEC directive," he said.

Muasya said the learners will sit for a national exam in October before joining Grade 4 under the new Competency Based Curriculum.

"The theme of the assessment is about patriotism, therefore the learners must demonstrate patriotism.

"As a school we thought of taking them to share foodstuffs with the needy, which is part of patriotism,” he said.

Veronica Wavinya, a Grade 3 teacher, said part of this year's KNEC guidelines is to collect items for donation to the needy and less fortunate within the community.

"By donating foodstuffs to the orphans, they will be demonstrating patriotism. As a school we have chosen the Mother's Vision Children's home located in Mtwapa," she said.

Centre manager Damaris Ndirangu expressed joy after receiving donations that will support more than 26 needy children in the institution.

"We are happy that the CBC has come with new tasks that will also help the needy benefit from the donation by schools. The act will also boost the morale of needy pupils and make them feel part of the society,” she said.

Mother's Vision Children’s home was started in 2006 by Susan Ngige, who passed away in April. It hosts total orphans and children who are neglected by their parents.

The rescue centre has been offering a good environment to CBC learners, who get to integrate with the less fortunate in society.

"This centre offers good opportunities to schools that would want their CBC children to come and integrate with our children. We also benefit from assorted food stuffs they donate,” the manager said.

The new 2-6-3-3-3 CBC system entails two years of pre-primary education, three years of lower primary, three years of upper primary, three years of lower secondary, three years of senior secondary and three years in tertiary education.
